A floppy disk or diskette is a storage medium formed by a round piece of magnetic material, thin and flexible, enclosed in a square or rectangular plastic cover. Floppy disks are read and written using a device called FDD, Floppy Disk Drive.

In 1967, IBM commissioned to develop a simple and inexpensive system for loading microcode into their System/370 central computers. Then they incorporated it in his first IBM PC and was able to evolve in different sizes and models of computers to reach our 3 ½-inch floppy disk and 1.44 MB (HD or high density).

Floppy disks, 3 ½ “(whose name was chosen to be similar to the word” cassette “), enjoyed great popularity in the eighties and nineties, used in household and personal computers to distribute software, store information quick and efficiently, data transfer between computers and create small backups, among other uses.
